Police, Revenue Touts Stir up Crisis in Onitsha
A civil rights group, Human Rights Fundamental Rights League International has petitioned His Excellency, Chief Dr. Willie Obiano, the Executive Governor of Anambra State over the pending crisis that if not properly checked may likely degenerate into chaos in the entire state.
In a-two-paged strong worded petition addressed to the state number one citizen of Anambra State titled; “Forceful Sale of Emblems, Badges and Buckets to Tricycles Operators (Keke Napep)” dated February 23, 2016 and made available to newsmen in Onitsha, civil rights group accused the Divisional Police officer in charge of Okpoko Police Division of having connived with the youths who poses as the revenue agents of the state government to defraud some tricycle operators.
The chairman of HRLI, Comrade Mike Umezulike alleged that some group of hoodlums and miscreant has engaged in arresting and beating up his members operating Keke NAPEP within Anambra State, especially those plying the roads within the Ogbaru Local Government Area in the pretense of forcing the revenue laws of the state.
Alleging that the members of Human Rights Fundamental Rights League International, numbering over 5,000 across Anambra State are forced to purchase Emblems, Badges and Buckets at the total cost of (N4, 600. 00) Four Thousand, Six Hundred Naira only, the activist however made it known that his members have been on the forefront of paying government approved revenue but vowed never to patronize revenue touts. He however said that the hoodlums have ripped some innocent citizens in the state of their heard earned money.
Stating that they have pleaded with the government contractor to give them a landing ground so as they can arrange themselves before knowing the next line of action, Comrade Umezuliki said why they are making contact to know how authentic the revenue collectors are, the hoodlums hiding under the umbrella of State revenue agents in conjunction with the police from Okpoko led by one Corporal Edet, has resorted in beating up their members, impounding their tricycles, having allegedly seized dozens of the tricycles and parked same at Okpoko Police Division.
When contacted, the Divisional Police Officer of Okpoko Police Station, CSP Kayode Olabanji said his position is that the police will always assist any government approved revenue agents and enforce the compliance of paying any revenue accruable to the state government.
On the allegation that the police at Okpoko have been milking the Keke Napep dry as a result of the crisis between the Human Rights group and the government agents, the DPO said he was not afraid of such allegation, stating that it has remain the accusation against the police any time any day.
