IPOB faults Buhari’s stance on Nigeria’s unity

As President Muhammadu Buhari’s recent declaration that Nigeria’s unity is non-negotiable continues to generate mixed reactions, the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) has faulted the President’s position.

In its reaction to Buhari’s comments, IPOB said that it showed that the President is not totally aware of the situation of things in the country.

IPOB’s Media and Publicity Officer, Emma Powerful, who issued the statement, described Buhari’s comment as “most unfortunate and self-serving”, adding that no part of Nigeria wants to continue with the “ forced political marriage called amalgamation.”

Powerful said: “It is unfortunate that somebody in that office cannot ascertain that the situation in the country calls for the renegotiation of its unity. The colonial masters amalgamated the northern and southern protectorates without consultation in 1914 and now no section of the country wants to stay with the other.”
