Human Rights group threatens to sue FG over abandonment of Akanu Ibiam Int Airport

The President Civil Rights Realisation and Advancement Network (CRRAN) Barrister Olu Omotayo has threatened to take legal action against the federal government for competent jurisdiction to compel the public authority concern to perform its’ public duties and commence
repairs of the runway of Akanu Ibiam International Airport Enugu.

Omotayo siad the call became necessary due to the obvious facts that the Akanu Ibiam International Airport is the only airport that serves the people of southeast on both international and domestic flights.

He stated this in a press statement sent to the Reformist online newsmagazine in Enugu.

The Human rights boss said the closure of the airport has affected the economy of the states of southeast particularly Enugu state.

“The closure has also created enormous suffering for the people traveling by air in the zone”.

“We write to you in respect of the above mentioned matter which needs your urgent attention”.

It would be recalled that the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, was closed down for repairs on 24th August 2019.

In his words: “The most surprising aspect of this closure is that six weeks after the closure, nothing has been done. No sign of any repair works; nothing has been done suggesting that the airport will be reopened soonest”.

Omotayo affirmed that the closure of the airport has affected the economy of the states of southeast particularly Enugu state.

“We submit that it is reckless for the authority that is saddled with duty to repair this airport to neglect and abandon the repairs after 6, weeks of closure”. “It is unheard of in any civilized democracy”.

The President of CRRAN insisted that it is the duty of the Federal government that closed down the airport, to ensure the speedy repairs of the airport.

Barrister Omotayo said there is nothing to play politics with on the renovation of this airport, it is a mandatory functions of the authorities concern to ensure urgent repairs so as to ensure that the airport is reopened as soon as possible in order to put an end to hardship and suffering of the citizens.

“We therefore demand that the proposed repairs on the airport runway be commenced immediately within seven (7) days from now, failure of which we shall approach court of competent jurisdiction to compel the public authority concern to perform its’ public duties”.
