APC Crisis in Enugu deepens
— Ben Nwoye suspended as party Chairman
Enugu All Progressive Congress, APC, crisis that has continued without adherence to the party constitution will drastically culminate with the balkanization of the party and pave way for PDP to retain power come 2019 in the state.
By Larry Onwuta
The controversy over who becomes the authentic chairman of All Progressive Congress, APC, in Enugu state has continued to annihilate the unity and cooperate existence of the party in the state.
It is regrettable that the crisis was coming when the opposition party in Enugu state ought to have began its preparation for another fight for the gubernatorial position but instead of engaging in such democratic ideals, the internal squabble in the party become the business of the day.
On July 3rd 2017, the Enugu state working committee of APC announced the indefinite suspension of its chairman, Barr. Ben Nwoye in a meeting presided over by the Deputy Chairman, Mr. Adolphus C Udeh at the party secretariat in the State
The suspension was as a result of what they described and accused Ben Nwoye of engaging in financial misappropriation and as well running the party as his personal enterprise.
Enugu state executive members of APC noted that the decision was as a result of the crisis rocking the Enugu chapter, which had lingered from 2015 till date.
The decision was signed by the Deputy State Chairman, Comrade Adolphus Udeh, the Acting State Secretary, Okolo Louis, the State Woman Leader, Lolo Queen Nwankwo, the Financial Secretary, Sydney Eze, the State Youth leader, Prince Ikechukwu Oloto, the State Treasurer, Okoro Ebere and the Vice Chairman, Chief Anike Nwoga.
In a 15-point resolution signed by the State Working Committee members, they alleged that “the State Chairman alongside with some stakeholders diverted money sent to Enugu State for Presidential and National Assembly election for his personal purposes.
“That the State Chairman has embezzled party funds with reckless abandon without any approval or authorization from the State Working Committee against the constitution of the party.
“That Dr. Ben Nwoye runs the administration of the party as a one-man show and authoritative in nature with intimidating tendencies by using the DSS and thugs that he brings to the State Working Committee and State Executive and State Executive meetings to intimidate members of the party.
“That the record shows that the state chairman signed 22 cheques without the approval of the State Working Committee.
“That the State chairman arrogated to himself the duties and functions of State financial secretary, treasurer, auditor, publicity secretary and secretary.”
Nwoye was also accused of engaging in anti-party activities, according to them, that such character further undermining the interest and growth of the party”, they stated.
They added that “the State chairman has arrogated to himself the position of maximum rule with powers to suspend, sack an executive member elected through the congress and reinstate at will.
It could be recalled that Nwoye claimed to have suspended some members of the executives without justification, a situation where he could not substantiate his claims at the national executive committee of the party.
The dramatist further positioned the state secretariat of All Progressive Congress, APC like a war theatre, a situation where security operatives were stationed at the party office ready for action. One would wonder what this crisis stands even when other political parties and actors are busy strategizing on how to win future election.
Ironically, the embattled Enugu state Chairman of APC, Dr Ben Nwoye instead of approaching the national executive committee of the party, national workin committee of the party, he choose the option of conducting a meeting and purported expulsion of the deputy chairman of the party in the state.
Nwoye said in his self-styled and characteristics that the expulsion was based on the report of fact-finding and disciplinary committee setup to investigate the allegation against the deputy chairman of the party.Mr Adolphus Udeh, according to statement the deputy chairman stands expelled from the party with effect from July 4th 2017.
Some political analysts were of the views that the investigation which Nwoye claimed to have conducted was a mare political drama because it is ridiculous wondering where a suspended chairman has gotten the powers to expel the people that suspended him.
But in a swift reaction, Comrade Adolphus Udeh dismissed the expulsion, saying that the suspended Chairman Dr Ben Nwoye has no constitutional right to expel anybody from APC in Enugu state.
Comrade Udeh maintained that the embattled Chairman seems not to have understood the workings of a political party and that he should not expose his ignorance rather Nwoye should appeal through national executive committee and national woring committee clear himself from the issues raised that prompted his suspension from APC in Enugu state.
So he remain suspended till the appropriate body looked into his case therefore Nwoye has no constitutional powers to expel anybody in the party, Udeh concluded.
Well, now that the battle line or rather the war theatre has been constituted, it left for the stakeholders and well meaning lovers of APC both in the state and national level weld into the matter and see how it should be resolved to avoid further destruction of the party in Enugu state.
