APC Chairmanship candidate escaped assassination attempt

The Chairmanship candidate of the All Progressives Congress ( APC) in Ivo local Government Area of Ebonyi State, Bro Kelechi Okorie yesterday alleged that some political thugs numbering over 30
suspected to be working for the People’s Democratic Party PDP candidate, Hon Ogbonnaya Chukwu Ude attacked him with dangerous weapons and left him in the poll of his blood.

Mr. Okorie who is currently receiving treatment in an undisclosed hospital in the State said that the thugs attacked him with machetes, axe, log of wood and other dangerous weapons and expressed shock that PDP could mobilize such political thugs in a local government election conducted by Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission, EBSIEC.

Okorie who contested the election with the former caretaker Chairman of the council, Hon Ogbonnaya Chukwu Ude alleged that he was attacked because he tried to stop PDP supporters from stuffing ballot boxes with already thumb printed ballot papers and carting away with it.

In a statement by his media aide, Prince Williams Ajah, “Mr Okorie and his supporters were attacked in Akaeze by hoodlums numbering over fifteen when he tried to resist attempts by a member of the PDP to stuff over two hundred thumb printed ballot papers into the ballot
box”

“This led to a violent confrontation between the two political party’s loyalists and the hoodlums who were already stationed close by, immediately descended on him with all kinds of weapons including
matchets, clubs, rods, stones etc.

According to the statement, “the Chairmanship candidate narrowly escaped being killed in by the assailants who proceded to smash his
Toyota Camry (spider) car” The statement said Bro Okorie and some of his supporters who
sustained varying degrees of injuries from the attack were later ferried out of the state to an undisclosed hospital where he is currently recuperating from the trauma of the ugly incident.

The group alleged that the elections was anything but free and fair as it was characterized by massive irregularities in favour of the ruling party in the state, PDP. “For as long as we are concerned the elections was fraught with so much irregularities especially ballot box stuffing and allotment of undeserved votes to the candidates of the ruling party (PDP) despite the assurances and directives of the state governor, Engr David Umahi, that all political parties and candidates in the election be given a
level playing field”.
The statement claimed that for the massive irregularities perpetrated by electoral officers in connivance with security agencies especially the army and police, the APC would have won the Ivo council polls with
a landslide victory.
The party called on its supporters in the council to remain calm and law abiding as it will take appropriate actions to bring all those involved in the dastardly act are brought to justice even as it vowed to challenge the election results in court.
“Our legal team have also been briefed and mobilised and appropriate actions are being taken to redress the matter. All those involved in the matter will soon be served”, concluded the statement.
Similarly in Ikwo Local Government Area of the State, supporters of APC sustained varying degrees of injuries following an attack by suspected thugs working for the ruling PDP,.
One of the victims, Nwugo Igwesi who spoke to our correspondent on phone, said they were at the polling boot casting their votes when thugs working for the PDP suspecting that the votes will not go in
their favour, swooped on the polling booth to cart away the election materials.
The source, who said the incident happened at Amegu, alleged that the youths of the area first resisted the attempts by the hoodlums prompting them to resort to shooting sporadically in the air to
disperse the crowd while others with matchetes and clubs attacks some of the youths injuring them in the process.
“I sustained a serious injury on my leg. Uche Odoh also had a broken leg while Nworie Sunday’s head was broken”, he added.
But Chairman of the PDP in the state, Onyekachi Nwebonyi debunked the allegations by the APC.
“Our supporters are law abiding and didn’t do anything of the sort. It is an afterthought and attention seeking effort by the candidate”, he said.
