Rights Group Seeks Removal of Abia OC SARs

By Alphonsus Nweze

Human Rights, Liberty Access and Peace Defenders Foundation ((HURIDE), has vowed to mobilise its members and other human right activists in the South East to protest the alleged human right violations of citizens in Abia State by the operatives of Special Anti-robbery Squad (SARs) led by Johnbull.
The chairman, Board of Trustees (BoT), HURIDE, Dede Uzor A. Uzor, said by Friday, October…all the members of civil society organisations in the zone will simultaneously embark on peaceful protest in Umuahia and Aba to press for the immediate removal of Johnbull due to his impunity and extortionists tendencies.

The latest move was sequel to an alleged complains by the people of Aba and Uturu following the recent arrest of social media activist, Comrade Okezie Goodluck, in Uturu Isuikwuato, who was handcuffed and driven in an open Hilux Van to Aba on the instruction of the officers in charge of SARS in Uturu and Aba, for allegedly posting the arrest and extortion of some citizens in his community by SARS operatives in Isukwuato in his face book wall.

According to HURIDE, “the action of the Police by arresting and handcuffing of the social media activists exposed him to ridicule and as if that was not enough, they took him to Aba SARS office where he was detained and refused bail until the President General of his community came ”

HURIDE, therefore, asked the Abia State Commissioner of Police and the IGP to act fast to curtail the alleged illegal activities of the two Police officers or it will mobilize the people in the zone to protest against the Police in the State.

“If IGP fails to investigate these two corrupt officers we will have no other alternative than to mobilise the people to match on the streets of Aba and Umuahia against the Police, and we demand the two officers must tender public apology to the victims of their extortion” HURIDE boss warned.

The human rights group listed those the SARS operatives allegedly extorted various sums of money from as, Uzu Chikaodi, N11,000. Akosim Monday N10,500. Onyedikachi Ugwa, N11,000. Amechi Chima, N5,200. Ndubueze Emmanuel, N21,500.Onimma Nnamdi, N5,500. Chinonso Mgbalogu, N5,000. and Chibueze Adibe N5,000.

“It was clear that Okezie was justifiably protesting the extortion of citizens and members of his community which has become the trade mark of SARs in Abia State, and it is unfortunate that efforts to sanitize SARS are being hampered by personnel like OC SARs, Aba and Uturu” Uzor said.
But Okezie was released but rearrested about two days later on the orders of Johnbull, which led HURIDE to demand for his immediate and unconditional release.

Okezie was believed to have been rearrested by the SARs operatives for raising alarm over his previous illegal arrest and extortion against members of his community by the Commander’s men when he was handcuffed and thrown at open back of Hilux Van.

HURIDE had condemned the earlier arrest of Okezie by SARs , which infuriated the SARs Commander,Mr JohnBull hence his order to rearrest him.

However, Okezie has since been released on the orders of Abia State Commissioner of Police on the intervention of Commissioner of Police Boniface Amadi
