Rangers begins CAF Confederation cup group stage with 2-0 victory over Salitas FC in Enugu

Rangers International Football Club of Enugu on Sunday defeated Salitas Football Club of Burkina Faso 2-0 in the first match of their Confederation of African Football group stage match.

Godwin Aguda started the onslaught in the second minute of the match as the home team took the game to their visitors at the blast of the whistle.

Rangers was made to wait till 60th minute of the interval as they could not score again before the first 45th minute.

It was Isaac Loute that made it 2-0 from a free kick at the edge of the 18 yard box after Ajani Ibrahim was fouled by the visitors defender.

Though, the two teams gave their all in the second half of the match but Bobby Clement missed double chances for the home team.

He missed a chance to score for Rangers in the 49th when the visitors defender misjudged a clearance and 87th minute when Aguda put him through to o e on one with the goalkeeper.

Speaking after the match, Rangers coach Olugbenga Ogunbote expressed happiness over the victory saying that it will serve as a moral boaster for his team in the group.

” We worked for the victory and beside the players played to instruction and thank God our effort was crown at last,” Ogunbote said.

Rangers captain of the day, Aguda thanked God that they get the victory in their first match of the group noting that they still have much to do until their quarterfinals beat is confirmed.

In his response, the visitors gaffer Ladji Coulibaly said his players played well but was not lucky to have scored and that he believed that they will come out victorious in their next group match.

He gave kudos to the home team for their sportsmanship during their arrival and even before the match.

” Ismael Zagre who captained the visitors said that he is happy inspire of the outcome of the match.

” We fought a good fight and in spite that we lost, all the same as that is football and tomorrow may be out day,” Zagre said.
