Onyechi Ononye emerges Onitsha NBA Chairman

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Onitsha branch has produced a Chairman that emerged unopposed for the first time since last 41 years

The newly elected Chairman Onyechi Ononye and the Vice Chairmanship candidate, Margret Wilcox Iwuchukwu were also scaled through the same process while the rest of the Executive Committee positions vied for are the posts of Secretary, Treasurer and Social Welfare.

The other candidates that emerged were Frank Ibechukwu, elected as Secretary, Princess Ajamma Muoneke, who won as Treasurer and Mrs Stella Ikeogu was victorious in the position of Social Welfare officer.

The election took place at the Onitsha Bar Centre, NBA Secretariat, High Court Premises, Onitsha.

Chairman of the Electoral Committee, Kpajie Nnamdi Ibegbu, SAN, in his remark affirmed that the election was significant in many respects, because for the first time since his 41 years in practice at Onitsha, the office of the chairman went unopposed.

“It has always been a very contentious office. And that nobody really wanted to contest against Barrister Ononye is an indication that he has contributed so much to the growth of the Onitsha Bar. He is a real Bar Man.’’

Kpajie Ibegbu noted that they had smooth accreditation and casting of ballots.

“Our job is to make sure that everything moved accordingly, and we did just that,’’ he said.

A former Chairman of the Association, Barrister Ozoemena Erinne expressed joy at the successful conduct of the election, which he said was free and fair.

He urged the new executives to take a cue from his achievements and contributions, in order to perform better.

“It is a heavy task but I have confidence that this executive will do better than I did,’’ Erinne said.

Harold Ekwerekwu, a member of the association that outcome of the current election was a good development in the Onitsha Bar, for the office of the chairman to go unopposed for the first time in the history of NBA Onitsha.

He enjoined the elected executive to move the premier bar forward.

On the signing of autonomy for the judiciary, he said that it would be one of the best things to happen to the nation’s judiciary.

“The impact will be great; it will lead to speedy discharge of cases and other sundry matters. It will make the judiciary really independent ’’.
