National Sports Festival: Anambra receives Unity Torch

Anambra State Government has received the 2020 Unity Torch from Chairman, Anambra State Sports Development Commission, Tony Oli.

Gov. Willie Obiano received the torch at Governor’s Lodge, Amawbia.

The Governor welcomed Anambra State athletes and their coaches for Edo 2020 National Sports Festival and prayed for peace and unity of the nation.

He said that Anambra was ready to compete at Edo 2020, saying that no fewer than 250 athletes had been selected for the festival.

Obiano noted that Anambra had acquired every facility to engage in the National and international competitions.

Chairman of the Commission, Oli emphasised that the Torch, as a symbol of unity was geared toward bringing all states under one umbrella in love.

He explained that Anambra had concluded arrangements to compete at Edo 2020; to beat its previous records in the 2018, where the state won five gold medals.

“The state has selected 250 athletes to compete in 11 sporting codes against the two events competed at last festival.”

The festival started in 1973 by Former Head of State, Yakubu Gowon.

The Torch was handed over to the Minister of Sports, Sunday Dare by President Mohammed Buhari on Jan. 30 and would go round the entire states of the federation.
