Local football competition produces international footballers -NASS Member

Dr Pat Asadu, House of representatives member representing Nsukka /Igboeze- South Federal constituency has said his aim of sponsoring football competition annually in the constituency is to fish out hidden talents.
Asadu said this in Nsukka during the opening. ceremony of the 2018 football competition tagged ‘Gburugburu Continuity Unity Cup’ sponsored by Asadu
The lawmaker said he was optimistic that the competition which he started since 2007 would one day produce the likes of Kanu Nwankwo and Augustin Okeocha who were international football players and made Nigeria proud.
“it is from local football competition like this that, the likes of Kanu Nwankwo and Augustine Okeocha were discovered before they become international players.
“My aim of sponsoring this football competition is to fish out hidden football talents in the constituency.
“My advise to players is to exhibit the spirit of sportsmanship and discipline. ‘ he said.
He noted the competition would promote unity and keep youths away from crime since it will keep them busy.
“This competition will foster unity among youths from the constituency as well as make them to shun crime.
” As representative of the people I give education scholarship, empower those in business as well as annually sponsor this football competition to fish out hidden talents as my little way of helping the people of my constituency.
“God destined people to succeed in various ways like through education, business as well as in sports.
Asadu said the finals of the competition would be played on January 13, 2019 at Government field Nsukka.
“The teams that come first, second and third will receive handsome financial reward while all players that participated in the competition will go home with a gift item.
“36 football teams from 20 wards from Nsukka LGA and 16 wards from Igboeze-South LGA are participating in the tournament,” Asadu said.
In a remark, Mr Patrick Omeje, Chairman Nsukka local government commended Asadu for maintaining the sponsorship of the football competition since 2007 .
“Asadu loves youths of this constituency he has given many undergraduates scholarships, empowers many in their businesses as well as sponsor this football competition annually to fish out talents in football.
“Asadu is a good man that is why he will win again in 2019 general elections.
Omeje who is the campaign director General for Asadu in Nsukka LGA said the football competition had promoted unity among youths and reduced crime in the constituency.
The highlight of the opening ceremony was a novelty football match between serving councilors in the constituency and PDP ward chairmen in the constituency in which councillors defeated ward chairmen by 2-0.
