Abia Health Workers Commend FMC Director For Commencement Of Kidney Transplant

The Medical and Health Workers Union Abia state chapter has commended the developmental strides of the medical director of Federal Medical Centre Umuahia Dr Abali Chuku.

The State Chairman, Comrade Okoro Ogbonnaya with the Union secretary comrade Omini Ojah stated this in his office  in Umuahia while interacting with the Reformist magazine. He reiterated that the transformation taking place now at the hospital is unprecedented and first of it kind in the zone.

He named the recent innovations to include procurement of various medical equipment which made it possible for the hospital to now carry out kidney transplant and birth aid through intro vitro fertilization (IVF) for childless women.

The Chairman noted that the hospital have successfully carried out two kidney transplant, he also commended the MD for the completion of 250 bedded ward and also completed the projects left by his predecessor adding also that the premises of the hospital is wearing a new look as the entire roads of the hospital have been asphalted and also wearing clean and green environment.

He however used the occasion to appealed to president Buhari to keep to the two promises he made to the south east  when he visited Ebonyi state to upgrade FMC Umuahia to a teaching hospital and to build the second Niger bridge adding that the MD have started putting in place equipment to meet up the standard.

The state chairman revealed that the 99 Union members who were posted to Health Management Board (HMB) and where compulsorily retired about two years ago by the state government was been addressed by the union.

He said that after the Union intervention the state government set up a committee which comprised members of the Union, Health Management Board (HMB),  Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Head of Service (HOS), Bureau of Establishment, Director of Pension and government officials.

He pointed that after weeks of sitting the committee came up with the following recommendations, 54 workers who have some years to serve were asked to be recalled with all their outstanding salaries paid to them while 28 others within the over two years period the crisis lasted and retirement age caught up with them  are recommended to be paid all their outstanding salaries before they finally proceed on retirement, 13 others  have not been seen or anything held about them so it was assumed they are ghost workers while the remaining 4 were confirmed to have retired before the suspension.

He revealed that non payment of regular salaries to parastatal by the state government was a big problem for the Union as the dues deducted as check off for the running of the union was delayed and affecting the running of the Union. He noted that Abia state university teaching hospital (ABSUTH) is been owned 8 months, HMB 6 months while Local government are owned arrears of  4 months.

He called on the government to treat parastatals like core ministries and pay their salaries as at when due

Comrade Ogbonnaya stated that their members working at Local Government at veterinary department and livestock officers are been owned Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS) since 2012 while their colleagues at the state ministries are enjoying the salary structure
