2023: Ex- Anambra Lawmaker calls for Igbo Presidency

By Alphonsus Nweze

The immediate past chairman of the Judicial Committee, Anambra State House of Assembly, Hon. Chugbo Enwezor, has decried the attempt to deny Ndigbo the opportunity to aspire for the highest office in Nigeria.
Enwzor who represented Onitsha 11 State Constituency in the House called on other geopolitical zones and stakeholders in the country to genuinely support the South East in their quest to produce the next president of Nigeria.

Enwezor’s call stemmed from the All Progressives Congress (APC)’s purported zoning of the Presidency to the South West. There is speculation that they would retain it in the North.

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate in the 2019 election, Alhaji Atiku Abubukar, has indicated his interest to contest the position in 2023 on the platform of the party.

PDP had declared that it has not zoned its presidential slot to any zone, hence throwing it open to all the zones.

But Enwezor, also a lawyer and rights activist argued like others from South East zone that equity, justice, and fairness demand that the South East should produce the President of Nigeria in 2023, since other other zones especially in the South has taken their slot.

Enwezor condemned the gross neglect of the zone by President Muhammdu Buhari’s administration, stressing that Ndigbo ought not to support the Government in power to get their entitlement as an integral part of Nigerian State.

He called for strict independence among the three organs of government, especially the parliament to ensure equity and balance in the running of the government
Enwezor assessed his eight years in the Anambra State House of Assembly, where he said he offered his constituency and the State quality representation so as to engender good governance in the State.

He said ” as the chairman of the Judicial Committee, with my colleagues we properly scrutinized laws that were made. We made laws to serve the people of Anambra State. One of such laws was the anti-kidnapping laws of Anambra State, which we fine tuned to ensure innocent people don’t suffer”.

Other laws, said Enwezor, was the Customary Law of the State, which made the position of Judges permanent, the Vigilant law, which was fine tuned to sustain the quality of vigilantism in the State.

“None of these laws has been declared inconsistent with the Constitution” said the ex-lawmaker.
